Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 (3-page Preface, 63 pages, edited for piano, no fingerings). This attractive Urtext of Bach’s popular variation cycle is not only extremely user-friendly and extra-legible, but in addition, presents groundbreaking performance practice research that explains Bach’s never-before-revealed plan of tempo relationships between variations. This discovery is highly significant with regards to the tempi chosen for the 30 variations in a complete performance. The first edition from 1741, engraved by Bach himself, shows fermatas after some, but not all, variations. Most editors assume this was an oversight by Bach, and thus, add fermatas where they do not belong. Virtually all editions of our time add fermatas where Bach did not indicate them. Perhaps the only edition that correctly reproduces Bach’s fermata indications is Peters (ed. Kurt Soldan, 1937). Mapping out Bach’s fermata plan for the complete cycle reveals an ingenious and fascinating symmetrical arrangement of pairs and groups of variations unified by direct tempo relationships. Bach’s tempo plan has never yet been honored by commercial artists because they have been steeped in false, 19th-century tempo traditions, they have been too influenced by Glenn Gould, and they have never been made aware of Bach’s use of fermatas due to faulty editions. Bach’s master plan is beautifully laid out and all the tempo relationships are explained in the three-page Preface, which also contains a tempo hierarchy matrix relevant to Bach performance as well as Bach’s well-known Table of Ornaments. This edition is ideal for pianists from the late-intermediate levels and higher as well as concert artists, scholars, and teachers who seek an informative edition of the Goldberg Variations for the concert hall or teaching studio. The four composer-sons of Johann Sebastian Bach were figures of decisive importance in the transitional period between the Baroque and Viennese classicism. Around the middle of the 18th century they were influential not only as composers but also as virtuoso players of keyboard instruments in promoting the enormous change in style that took place during those decades. This volume offers a selection of the genres typical of the keyboard works by Bach's sons, thereby also giving students an excellent introduction to Viennese classicism and to the works of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven.

In 1725, J.S. Bach gave his second wife, Anna Magdalena, a Notenbüchlein - a collection of solo keyboard pieces and arias. Most of the keyboard pieces were composed by friends, colleagues, and his son, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. The easier keyboard works were probably used to instruct their children, while the arias would have been performed by Anna Magdalena, who was a singer. For this edition, Edwin McLean has chosen and expertly edited the most popular and easier keyboard pieces. Originally, the pieces contained no dynamics and virtually no phrasing, which is typical of baroque harpsichord music and even early 18th-century fortepiano music. Sectional dynamics have been added editorially and may be changed at the discretion of the performer. A minimal amount of phrasing and articulation has also been added for clarity. This edition preserves the original notation for appoggiaturas, where small eighth or quarter notes resolve to the principal note. Ossias have been included to show how to play them; ossias also appear when needed for ornaments such as trills and mordents.

Eugen d'Albert (1864-1932) enjoyed an illustrious and colourful career as both concert pianist and composer. He wished to include J.S. Bach's music in his concerts and sought the grandeur of some of the large secular organ works. The transcriptions he made for this purpose are arguably better than the numerous Bach transcriptions made by his contemporaries. D'Albert's versions of eight secular masterworks present them remarkably close to their original form, yet perfectly matched to the modern piano. At times, they make very considerable technical demands, but the effort to master them is amply rewarded. This 116-page volume marks their first appearance since they were first issued over a century ago. Many errors and inaccuracies have been remedied and English translations of his musical terms have been provided.

Busoni's Bach Advanced SchoolIn October 1909, Breitkopf & Hartel succeeded in winning Ferruccio Busoni for the edition of Johann Sebastian Bach's piano works. Busoni had studied the music of Bach more intensively than almost any other artist of his time had. As a pianist, arranger, theorist and pedagogue, Busoni was instrumental in bringing Bach out of the 19th century and into the 20th century. That same year, Busoni and two collaborators, Bruno Mugellini and Egon Petri, began work on the instructive edition, which was to comprise 25 volumes. The first volumes were published in the spring of 1916, and in May 1923, the Bach Advanced School project was finally completed. This also marked the end of Busoni's thirty-year-long creative involvement with Bach's works, the impact of which still reaches far beyond the Bach-Busoni formula. All alterations and additions pursue the educational intent of affording the student insight into the mechanism of the composition. Moreover, they illustrate and supplement the views presented only in a sketchy manner in the introductions. In several cases, it takes the sum of the comments on the various pieces to constitute the all-encompassing opinion on one and the same question. (Ferruccio Busoni).

Bach's Two-Part Inventions, first printed in 1801, have played a key role in modern-day music education for decades. Bach dedicated the predecessor of these works to his son, Wilhelm Friedemann they were originally-titled Preambulum and compiled within the collection of piano music known today as Klavierbüchlein für Wilhelm Friedemann Bach (1720). The principle aim of these pedagogical works was to promote the acquisition of clean two-part playing as well as stylistically-sound cantabile playing. As a musical form, the invention left its mark on the music composition tendencies and conventions of the 17th century as well as its musical performance practices. Bach'sinventions as a whole also provide students with insight into the fundamentals of counterpoint.

The concertos in A minor, B flat major and A major were first written as violoncello concertos between 1750 and 1753. They thus rank among the very first concertos for solo cello in Germany. The A minor Concerto, composed in 1750, is performed quite frequently today. C. P. E. Bach most likely wrote the Concerto in B flat major Wq. 171 as the last of the little work group in 1753 in Potsdam, at the court of King Frederick the Great. He reworked the composition for flute and harpsichord shortly thereafter. Various sources prove that copies of the work had made it known quite extensively in the second half of the 18th century. In his new Urtext edition, Ulrich Leisinger bases himself on two reliable manuscripts.

Danish composer and organist Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707) is a prime example of the North German baroque school and an influence on Johann Sebastian Bach's style. The works in this three-volume collection were found in a family-book, which for centuries was handed down in the Danish family of Ryge until their discovery in the mid-20th century. The collection of 19 suites, 6 works of variation, and 3 anonymous works (likely by Buxtehude) have been compiled and edited by Emilius Bangert. Vol. 1 includes Suites I-X; Vol. 2 includes Suites XI-XIX; Vol. 3 includes Works of variation and anonymous works.
